How to Download and Install Device Packages for CiscoWorks Windows
CiscoWorks Windows is a network management software that allows you to monitor and configure Cisco devices using graphical user interfaces. To support new devices or update existing ones, you need to download and install device packages from Cisco Connection Online (CCO) or from a CD-ROM. Device packages contain application upgrades, graphics, device descriptions, MIB files, and other files that enable CiscoWorks Windows to communicate with the devices.
In this article, we will show you how to download and install device packages for CiscoWorks Windows from CCO. You can also use the same steps to download and install device packages from a CD-ROM, except that you need to insert the CD-ROM into your computer and browse to the appropriate directory.
Prerequisites
Before you download and install device packages for CiscoWorks Windows, you need to meet the following requirements:
You need to have Internet access and a web browser.
You need to have a CCO account. If you do not have one, you can register for free at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/index.html.
You need to have CiscoWorks Windows installed on your computer. You can check the version of CiscoWorks Windows by selecting Start > Programs > CiscoWorks Windows > About.
You need to close CiscoView before you install a device package. CiscoView is a component of CiscoWorks Windows that provides graphical views of Cisco devices. The device package does not install correctly if CiscoView is running during installation.
Steps
To download and install device packages for CiscoWorks Windows from CCO, follow these steps:
Create a cv_pkgs directory in the CiscoWorks Windows directory on your computer. For example, if you installed CiscoWorks Windows in C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\CiscoWorks Windows, create a cv_pkgs directory under that path.
Go to https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/index.html and log in with your CCO account.
Navigate to the Downloads section and search for the device package that you want to download. You can also browse by product category or technology. For example, if you want to download a device package for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches, you can go to Products > Switches > Campus LAN Switches - Core and Distribution > Catalyst 6500 Series Switches > Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Software Downloads.
Select the device package that matches your device model and CiscoWorks Windows version. For example, if you have a Catalyst 6509 Switch and CiscoWorks Windows 4.0, you can select cv6500.cv50.v4-0.zip.
Read the Readme file that accompanies the device package. The Readme file contains important information about the device package, such as system requirements, installation instructions, known issues, and release notes.
Download the device package file into the cv_pkgs directory that you created in step 1. For example, save cv6500.cv50.v4-0.zip in C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\CiscoWorks Windows\cv_pkgs.
Unzip the device package file using a tool such as WinZip or 7-Zip. You should see a .tar file extracted in the cv_pkgs directory. For example, cv6500.cv50.v4-0.tar.
Select Start > Programs > CiscoWorks Windows > Install Device. The Setup program starts.
In the Select Package dialog box, select the directory containing the .tar file (C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\CiscoWorks Windows\cv_pkgs) and click Next.
In the Select Device dialog box, select the device package that you want to install (cv6500.cv50.v4-0) and click Next.
In the Confirm Installation dialog box, click Next to start the installation.
Wait for the installation to complete. You can check the progress in the Installation Status dialog box.
